Zones

Last updated:

A zone is an area on the map where your agency sets the burning rules. Your organization can have several zones, for example a city and a rural area with different seasons.

Zone statuses and what residents see

Zone status Answer residents see
Seasonal Burning is allowed inside a season window, not allowed outside it. See Burn seasons.
Allowed unless closed Burning is allowed unless a closure is in force.
Never allowed Burning is not allowed, whatever the date.
Contact the agency Contact the agency before burning, with your message and contact details. Use it if you issue permits outside the platform.
Not set up Status unknown. Residents are referred to you.

A status that is missing, unset or unclear is never shown as allowed.

Overlapping zones

Several agencies' zones often cover the same point: a fire district, state forestry, an air-quality agency. All of them take part. Burning is allowed only if every one of them allows it. If any of them closes burning, the answer is "Burning is not allowed", and residents see every agency's reason.

If two of your own zones overlap and disagree, the more restrictive one wins. We warn you when you create an overlap like that.

Holes in a boundary

A zone can have holes, for example a city inside a county zone. A point inside the hole is not in the zone; the zones that cover the hole decide there.

Who residents contact

Residents see the contact of the response agency: the agency that responds to fires at that place. Several can overlap, for example a structural fire district and a wildland agency. If no response agency covers a place, we show the nearest covering agency and label it as a fallback.

Draw or upload a boundary

Draw the boundary on the map or upload a GeoJSON file, check the preview, and save. Boundaries are checked and corrected for invalid shapes when saved.
